Self-defense: Luxury or Responsibility?
I remember a time when learning the martial arts and self-defense was considered a recreational activity. In fact it is still viewed as such by many who either think of it as a sport, have never been in a violent confrontation & believe they never will or think it's just a fashionable way to get in shape.

The truth is it was never intended to be a sport, violent confrontations are a daily occurrence and being in shape is health imperative everyone should strive for. Hence I strongly believe that every man, women and child should, at the very least, be familiar with the basics of self preservation.

I remember a man in one of my seminars who was having a problem excepting the violent retaliation needed to defend against a specific attack. He said he hated violence and only came because his company sent him. I then told him a story of a young women who was raped and murdered. During the autopsy they found the skin of her attacker under her nails, which meant she obviously fought vigorously for her life. Then I asked the man "if that was your daughter wouldn't you have wanted her to have every possible tool available to protect herself?" Needless to say, he agreed and remained totally focused for the remainder of the seminar.

After all the police can't be everywhere and usually respond after the fact. So you are responsible for your safety you should see to it that you and your loved ones get the information they need to be safe. I've always held the opinion that it's always better to have and not need then to need and not have!
